Silver is bulky compared with gold. That is part of its appeal and one of its main practical disadvantages. A few tubes are simple; hundreds or thousands of ounces become a physical logistics project.
Troy ounces are not household ounces
Precious metals use troy ounces. One troy ounce is approximately 31.1035 grams. A 100 troy ounce bar weighs about 3.11 kilograms before packaging.
Containers add weight and volume
Tubes, capsules, boxes, dividers and cases make a collection larger than the metal alone. Monster boxes are intentionally dense. Measure shelf capacity and container dimensions rather than relying on product photography.
Distribute load sensibly
Do not place a concentrated stack on flimsy furniture. Use shelving and floors appropriate for the load. Avoid storing everything in one awkward container that cannot be moved safely.
Inventory without advertising it
Maintain private records of quantities, types and purchase documentation. Avoid labels visible from outside storage containers that announce precious metals.
Bullion is volatile, can trade below your purchase price, produces no income and creates storage, insurance and resale responsibilities. This page is educational and does not recommend a personal allocation.
